Since marriage establishes the couple in a public state of life in the Church, it is fitting that its celebration be public, in the framework of a liturgical celebration, before the priest (or a witness authorized by the Church), the witnesses, and the assembly of the faithful.

Marriage in the Catholic Church is the "covenant by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole life, and which is ordered by its nature to the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring." Marriage "has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament between the baptized."
Church of St. Peter hosts a Marriage Preparation Program for all couples interested in the Sacrament of Matrimony. The program includes meeting with the clergy, working with a mentor couple and attending preparation programs at the Church of St. Peter and the Archdiocese.
