The backpack program supports local elementary school students every weekend during the school year. These children would likely go hungry over the weekend without the meals served to them during the week at school.
The backpack program counts on volunteers and donations from our parish community. Service opportunities include:
donating money
donating food
volunteering time to assemble the backpacks
How you can help
Food Donations The type of food the program uses is particular in that the food needs to be single-serve, microwaveable, and shelf-stable. Please see the donation list for ideas on how you can help us provide this vital ministry to our neighbors in need. Food donations can be placed in the marked box inside the Margaret St. entrance. All food items are collected and assembled by volunteers into backpacks so the students can take the backpacks home with them discreetly and with dignity.
Volunteer hours Volunteering are needed to assemble the food into bags. This is done once a month on Wednesdays at 4:00. We have a small room located off the school cafeteria where we store the food. We meet in the school cafeteria where the “backpack room” is located basically have an “assembly line” process of packing the food in bags for the month.
Each week the school picks up approximately 16 bags (this is the number of children we have been supporting). If you would like to volunteer your time I will add you to our email list of volunteers who regularly come to pack the bags. You will get a schedule at the beginning of the school year with the packing dates and a reminder the week we are packing. It is usually the first or second Wednesday of the month.
Money
The backpack program is fully funded by volunteer donations and funds are always needed to purchase additional food for the program.
